Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit warned Tuesday that dealing with Sudan irresponsibly would result in grave consequence in the African country, especially in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.

Political settlement is the only way out for the Darfur crisis, which has revealed numerous complications among various parties inside and outside Sudan, the official MENA news agency quoted Abul Gheit as saying.

The top Egyptian diplomat said the country will continue its efforts to help solve the Darfur crisis, urging the international community and the Sudanese parties to "deal seriously and swiftly with efforts to activate the political track in settling the crisis."

On Monday, the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo formally requested an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

In response, Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali el-Sadeq said the ICC attempt to indict al-Bashir on crimes against humanity is mainly aimed at undermining Sudan's peace process and inhibiting its development and democratic transformation drive.

The ICC move, in total disregard of the efforts taken by the Sudanese government, the regional powers and the international community on the issue of Darfur, could threaten the already fragile peace process in the restive region, said the spokesman.
