Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda has taken a swipe at presidential hopeful of the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD), Clive Chirwa, for allegedly politicizing President Levy Mwanawasa's illness, according to Zambia Daily Mail on Wednesday.
Speaking on arrival at the Livingstone International Airport in southern province on Tuesday, Banda said it was regrettable that some people are twisting facts about Mwanawasa's condition.
He said that the government could not lie about the condition of the president and that the nation would be given the correct update on how he was progressing.
He said there was no need for the state to twist facts and manufacture what does not exist.
"We are not in a mourning state because the president is alive and getting better. I am happy with the reports from the hospital where the president is admitted indicating that he is getting better.
"We are not going to tell the nation what does not exist and there is no need to twist the facts about the condition of the head of state," Banda said.
Mwanawasa suffered a stroke on June 29 in Egypt where he was attending an African Union (AU) heads of state summit.
He was admitted to Sharm-el-Sheik International Hospital in the resort city of Sharm-el-Sheik in Egypt and was evacuated to Percy Military Hospital in Paris on July 1 where he is still admitted.
