Spokesperson of Zambian ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) Benny Tetamashimba has accused MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba of fanning confusion in the party using President Levy Mwanawasa's illness to achieve his presidential ambition, according to Times of Zambia on Wednesday.

Tetamashimba told a press briefing in Lusaka Tuesday that the MMD risked plunging into trouble if people like Kalumba were not stopped from championing presidential ambitions and attacking anybody proposing that Mwanawasa should be relieved of his party duties.

Tetamashimba also apologized to the president's relatives for any harm that could have been caused when he issued a statement proposing that the party should consider replacing Mwanawasa when he returns home following his current illness.

"If they believe that my stating that we should consider a successor when the president comes back and in considering the importance of his health which demands less work and they believe my statement is incorrect, I apologies to them," he said.

Tetamashimba, who is Local Government and Housing Deputy Minister, however cautioned the first family to be wary of "some people showing false sympathy when all they want is to take up the MMD leadership."

He maintained that his statement was well meant to both the party and the first family as he considered Mwanawasa's health more important than his job.

Tetamashimba said he was worried that his advice was being twisted by people who had never defended the party in critical moments.

Earlier Kalumba said Tetamashimba's statement over the succession of Mwanawasa is an ill-advised personal opinion.
