A top UN official in Cote d'Ivoire has called for the identification process ahead of November's presidential election to be launched quickly.
"It is urgent to begin the identification operations without delay so that we can meet the deadlines set in the electoral process, "the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative, Y. J. Choi, told journalists following a meeting with President Laurent Gbagbo.
He also reaffirmed the United Nations' pledge to assist the West African nation in conducting the long-delayed polls.
Choi highlighted the logistical challenges that still needed tobe tackled, including the availability of funds to organize electoral operations.
During the meeting with the president, presentations were made on how the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire would support the organization of and security for the election, scheduled for Nov. 30.
The presidential polls, which have been repeatedly postponed since October 2005, are expected to mark the end of the peace process in Cote d'Ivoire, a country racked by six years of civil war involving the government-controlled south and rebel New Forces in the north.
