Angola's Constitutional Court (TC) have cleared a total of 14 candidates including 10 Angolan political parties and four coalitions for the scheduled September 5 parliamentary elections, Angola's official news agency ANGOP reported on Thursday.
The TC, after going through the files of the 14 candidates submitted between June 27 and July 7, gave a green light to them, including the ruling party the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and leading opposition parties the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and the Social Renewal Party (PRS).
Other candidates cleared for the legislative elections are the Democratic Renewal Party (PRD), Liberal Democratic Party (PLD), Angola's Youth, Laborers and Peasants Alliance (PAJOCA-PP), Democratic and Progress Support of Angola (PADEPA), Democratic Party for Progress of Angola's National Alliance (PDP-ANA), the Front for Democracy (FpD). The four coalitions getting the pass forthe elections are AD-Coligacao, New Democracy (ND), Political Electoral Platform and Angolan Fraternal Forum (Fofac).
Meanwhile, the TC turned down the candidates of (PDA) led by Alberto Neto who in the 1992 presidential elections came third after Jose Eduardo dos Santos and Jonas Savimbi, Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Republican Party of Angola (PREA).
Also banned from the legislative contest were PSA, PNDA, PACIA,UNDA, MPR/SN, PDUNA, PDPA - NTO BAKO and PSPA that have been given a 24-hour deadline to appeal with the TC.
The lists of the 14 contesting candidates are going to be submitted to the National Electoral Commission for proper arrangement on ballot papers.
A total of 34 applications for candidatures for the September 5 legislative elections were submitted to the TC between June 26 and July 7 with 10 pertained to party coalitions.
Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos announced the holding of the parliamentary elections in his 2007 year-end message to the nation, saying that the holding of the parliamentary elections "is a process that will deepen the democratic system in Angola.
"The first parliamentary elections in Angola were held in 1992,but due to the resumption of the civil war there have not yet been the second polls.
The ending of the 27-year civil war 6 years ago in Angola has paved the way for holding the second normal and regular functioning of the democratic process.
