Angola's National Electoral Commission (CNE) has appealed to all political parties and coalitions and people for abiding by the rules outlined in the Electoral Law during the electoral campaign for the September 5 legislative elections.

In a communique issued on Monday, the CNE said both public and private media and their agents "must act with strictness and professionalism in relation to the acts relating to the campaign" which kicks off on Tuesday.

The campaign aims at collecting votes through the explanation of ideological principles, political, social and economic programs, governance platforms of the candidates, it added.

According to the document, the electoral campaign consists of the activity of justification and promotion of the candidacies through diverse means based on the respect for the rules of law.

It said the campaign should be carried out in the whole of the national territory on equality of circumstances and conditions for all.

The document also barred the publication of any opinion polls or surveys relating to the candidates during the electoral period until the next day after the voting.

The campaign will last 30 days and end at midnight of the day before the elections with 10 parties and four coalitions struggling for votes.

Last week, the electoral court outlined that each approved party or coalition is allowed to give five minutes of television time each day and 10 minutes on radio to entice voters.

To show to the world Angola is going to have a free, transparent election in a democratic way, the CNE has invited foreign observers to come to oversee the electoral process.

Las week, the first eight electoral observers of the European Union (EU) arrived in Angola.

The observers, most of them MPs of the EU, the first batch of a total 100 EU observers to come to monitor the elections, are going to meet with representatives of political parties and coalitions as well as visit some provinces.
