The report of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on human development index on Angola is "outdated comparing to the current level of growth in the country," Angola's official news agency ANGOP reported on Saturday.
Deputy Minister of Education Pinda Simao was quoted as saying that the information contained in the UNDP report contradicts the reality of Angola's education sector in the past four years.
The report which places Angola in the 162nd position in a total of 171 countries presents lower rates of popularity of education, per-capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth and literacy, he said, adding that what the information represents is the education situation in Angola four years ago.
He said the report does not contain data related to primary education, a level that registers greater government efforts to guarantee access for all.
The official said the lack of updated data is due to the fact that the UNDP sometimes gathers information from non-governmental institutions.
"According to information that we have on evolution of the education system in Angola, the enrollment rates increased by a big margin and the number of teaching staff doubled in the last four years," he said.
"If we consider the data at the disposal of Angola, the human development indicator that is contained in the UNDP 2007/2008 report may not mirror the current reality of the country, above all at education level," he added.
The UNDP report assessed 171 countries in the world and placed Angola the 162nd place after Rwanda, Senegal, Eritrea, Nigeria and Tanzania. Source:Xinhua
