South Africa promised here Thursday that it will do everything to ensure the deepening of the economic integration of the Southern African Development Community(SADC) during its chair.
Speaking upon assuming the chair of the SADC Council of Ministers, South African Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said her country will also work hard to intensify the regional infrastructure development and restore and strengthen regional political unity and cohesion.
Zuma, meanwhile, noted that there are many challenges facing the regional organization in pursuing its ultimate goal of integration.
"No organization can exist without challenges. We are having challenges with respect to the political and economic situation in Zimbabwe in particular," the foreign minister said.
South Africa has taken the chair of SADC from Zambia.
Zuma was speaking two days ahead of the 28th summit of SADC to be held here from Saturday to Sunday.
The summit are preceded by the meeting of the Council of Ministers and the meeting of the Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration.
The SADC was formed in Lusaka, Zambia on April 1, 1980, following the adoption of the Lusaka Declaration, SADC website says.
The member states are Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe
