Nigeria's Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa on Thursday described Nigeria's withdrawal and transfer of authority to Cameroon as a painful event.
The minister stated this in his address during the final handover ceremony, which held in the Cross River state's capital Calabar in southeast Nigeria.
He said Nigeria's decision to handover the region to Cameroon was aimed at keeping its commitment with a ruling of an international tribunal, which cannot be reverse.
He added that the gains of Nigeria's action were in pursuit if international peace, good neighborliness and rule of law, noting that this may outweigh the painful losses in territory, ancestral homes and other emotions too numerous to mention.
He assured the people of Bakassi that President Yar'Adua is much concerned with in their welfare, adding that the government has taken measures to address their present plight.
According to him, there are sincere arrangements for the resettlement of Nigerian citizens who elect not to remain in Bakassi as citizens of Cameroon.
