Junior doctors and pharmacists of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka called off their strike Tuesday following the death of President Levy Mwanawasa on the same day.
They said that it will be inhuman if they continue the strike after the death of the president.
The pharmacists Monday joined the strike by junior doctors who started their strike last Wednesday to press for improved housing allowances, according to Times of Zambia.
UTH management welcomed the call-off of the strike.
The junior doctors at UTH went on an indefinite strike Wednesday vowing not to resume work until they are given decent accommodation.
The resident doctors are getting 480,000 kwacha (about 3,400 kwacha to 1 U.S. dollar) per month after tax as housing allowance.
Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) president Crispin Moyo said in Lusaka last Friday said the 480,000 kwacha housing allowance that resident doctors received per month could not be used to rent reasonable accommodation.
