The Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has expressed great sadness and sorrow at the death of Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa.
Sharma said the death of Mwanawasa is a great loss as he was an illustrious son of Africa, who had great vision for the peace, progress and prosperity of the continent.
According to a statement released on the commonwealth secretariat website on Friday, in a letter to Acting Zambian President Rupiah Banda, Sharma expressed his sincere condolences to the government and people of Zambia and to the bereaved family.
Sharma noted that President Mwanawasa was deeply devoted in particular to the Commonwealth's goals of delivering development and prosperity to all, as well as its ideals of democracy, good governance, human rights and the rule of law.
He said that Mwanawasa strove hard to implement those objectives in Zambia and the region, especially in his role as the Chairman of the Southern African Development Community.
"His death is a grievous loss to Africa, the Commonwealth and he international community. The entire Commonwealth family grieves with the people of Zambia at this difficult time," he said.
Mwanawasa, 59, died at Percy military hospital on Tuesday in Paris where he had been admitted since July 1 after he suffered a stroke in Egypt whilst attending the African Union (AU) heads of state summit. Source:Xinhua
