The Ugandan army said on Friday that it is increasing surveillance along the country's western border with eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where fresh fighting has erupted between government forces and rebels.
Capt. Tabaro Kiconco, the 2nd division army spokesman, told Xinhua by telephone that the military is monitoring the situation and mobilizing the population in the border district of Kisoro to report any armed group that crosses into the country.
Fresh fighting broke out on Thursday between the Congolese army and rebels loyal to renegade commander Laurent Nkunda.
Kiconco said mortar and grenade fire could be heard in Kisoro from Busanza about 15 km inside DRC.
He said major fighting was about 150 km inside the vast central African country.
Several Ugandan rebel groups operating from eastern DRC use the tense security situation in the region to occasionally launch attacks against the Ugandan government.
The Congolese government early this year signed a peace deal with a variety of rebel groups to end decades of war in the country.
