Cote d'Ivoire's ruling party, the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), chose incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo Saturday as its nominee to compete in the Nov. 30 presidential elections.
Gbagbo has honored his promise to make people's interests the top priority since he was sworn in eight years ago and has contributed to the peace process in the country, said Pascal Affi N'Guessan, president of the FPI.
"We support the leadership of Gbagbo and will nominate him as the presidential candidate of our party," he said.
Civil war erupted in Cote d'ivoire in September 2002 following a failed political coup. The war ended with the country split between a rebel-held north and a government-controlled south.
Presidential elections, due since October 2005, have had to be repeatedly postponed as rival political forces rowed over issues concerning demilitarization and verification of citizens' identity
A peace agreement was signed between the government and rebels in March this year, under which rebel leader Guillaume Soro was appointed prime minister.
In April, the parties agreed to hold the presidential elections on Nov. 30. Source:Xinhua
