At least six people were killed and 12 others injured on Saturday in a landslide in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, the official MENA news agency reported.
Rescue teams rushed to the spot and are still working to search for survivors of the landslide that leveled a number of shanties in a slum in the east of the capital, said the report.
The shantytown hit by the landslide is opposite to a police-training center in El-Deweiqa area, close to the eastern Cairo suburb of Nasr City.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, including El-Zahraa and El-Demerdash hospitals, for treatment.
Other international media reported that over 18 people were killed and 22 injured when a massive landslide buried the shanties in south of Cairo.
Some rocks weighing between 60 to 70 tons fell on the village at the foot of the Muqattam hills Saturday morning crushing some 50 homes. Many are believed to still be buried under the stone, according to local security sources.
The victims are still waiting for heavy machinery to arrive at the scene to help lift the rocks and rescue efforts are currently taking place by hand, said the sources.
