Observers of the African Union (AU) overseeing parliamentary elections in Angola's southern Huila province said on Saturday that the elections in Lubango, the capital of Huila province, were successful.
Tsudao Gurivab, coordinator of the AU observer commission, said the elections in Huila province were successful due to the organization of the Huila Provincial Electoral Commission (CPE) as well as the good civility and will of voters.
He added that the members of the AU observer mission were impressed by the way the elections were prepared and held in the province.
"Angolans showed that they can hold elections without any constraints and gave a lesson to other peoples of our continent and showed that they can also live in peace, harmony and democracy," he said.
"We could see that the polling stations opened exactly at 7 p.m. and four hours later, almost everyone had already exercised their civic right," he added.
The official underscored that the AU observers will give the AU member states positive information on how the elections in Angola took place, particularly in Huila province.
Also in Huila province to monitor the elections included Angolan national observers and two European Union observers.
According to Matundu Vita, head of the Information Office of the Angola Press Center (CIAM), except some polling stations in Luanda province which houses the Angolan capital, voting in the country almost completed on Friday on schedule.
"Voting in Angola as a whole is underway smoothly and peacefully," he said.
