Initial results issued here on Sunday by Angola's National Electoral Commission showed that the ruling party the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) wins an overwhelming victory during the September 5 parliamentary elections.
The results based on 35 percent of the votes in 15 out of Angola's 18 provinces show that the ruling party MPLA wins 1,407,628 ballots while the main opposition party the Union for the Total Independence of Angola gains 212,909 votes, representing roughly 81 percent and 10 percent of the votes respectively.
Over 8.2 million Angolans were registered for the elections and cast their votes at 12,274 polling stations across the country on Friday. To show the world that Angola pursues after democracy, the government also invited 1,200 foreign observers from 17 international organizations and 10 countries to follow up the elections.
Fourteen out of Angola's 150 political parties and coalitions took part in the elections fight for 220 parliamentary seats.
