Angolan ruling party MPLA taking lead as 3.4 mln votes counted

About 3.4 million votes have been counted, an official from the National Electoral Commission (CNE) said here on Sunday.

Adao de Almeida, a spokesperson of CNE, told reporters that among the 3.4 million votes, 3.1 million votes were validated, representing 89.86 percent; and 4,753 votes complained, 1.18 percent; 170,972 votes null, 4.95 percent and 138.309 votes blank,4.1 percent.

Angola's ruling party the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won 2,532,282 votes, accounting for 81.65 percent, while the main opposition party the National Union of the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) obtained 329,505 votes.

The spokesman said the CNE will update the results in every four hours.

Over 8.2 million Angolans were registered for the elections and cast their votes at 12,274 polling stations across the country on Friday. To show the world that Angola pursues after democracy, the government also invited 1,200 foreign observers from 17 international organizations and 10 countries to follow up the elections.

Fourteen out of Angola's 150 political parties and coalitions took part in the elections fight for 220 parliamentary seats.
