UN peacekeepers have fired warning shots at anti-government forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to prevent militiamen from taking a key town in North Kivu Province, said a press release of the UN mission on Monday.
Blue helmets fired warning shots last Saturday to armed militiamen from the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), preventing their further advance in the Rutshuru area, especially in the Kikuku Village, the mission said.
Noting the fragile security situation in North Kivu, the mission urged all signatories to the Goma deal to return immediately to the process of disengagement from fighting.
The CNDP, led by Tutsi general Laurent Nkunda, had clashed with government forces since August 2007. The two sides signed a peace deal in Goma January this year, agreeing to abide by a ceasefire, end hostility and resume peace.
