South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Khartoum Monday evening on a two-day official visit to Sudan during which he will hold talks on bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the two countries.
President Mbeki was received upon arrival at Khartoum Airport by Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir, ministers and senior government officials.
Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Deng Alor told reporters at the airport that the visit came at a "suitable time" as Sudan was due to participate in the general assembly of the United Nations, noting that South Africa was enjoying regional and international weights.
Alor hoped that "positive results would come out of the visit in order to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries and the peace process in Sudan.
It is expected that the issue of a recent demand made by a prosecutor of the International Criminal Courts to arrest the Sudanese president on war crimes in the western Sudanese region of Darfur will be discussed in the UN meeting to be held in New York next week.
