Uruguay's new Economy Minister Alvaro Garcia promised on Thursday to continue the economic policies of his predecessor Danilo Astori, who has resigned to seek a presidential candidate.
During an official event at the ministry, Garcia also promised to offer "work, responsibility and honesty," saying he will keep a low profile away from politics.
General elections are slated for 2009 in the country.
The 46-year-old minister, a member of the Socialist Party (PS) of Uruguay, was president of the National Corporation for Development for three years before he was appointed to lead the ministry.
Meanwhile, Garcia vowed to continue the fight against inflation and closely follow the international economic situation.
The aim of the ministry is to create a favorable climate for business so that "more and better” investors will keep coming to the country, Garcia said.
"Uruguay has a long way to go in achieving prosperity for all. We must work above the interests of political parties and only in this way we will achieve it," Garcia said.
The Uruguayan economy is expected to grow at least 9 percent in2008, the forth consecutive year of expansion. The country's unemployment has dropped almost 2 percent to 7.6 percent in the past two years.
