The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the country's civil aviation watchdog, would shut the Kaduna Airport for 10 days for runway maintenance with effect from October 13.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday, the airport, one of major ones in Nigeria's northern part, has been found that its runway deterioration would be a threat to safe flight operations.

Speaking on the closure, FAAN General Manager Akin Olukunle said that the airport's runway had been damaged.

He quoted FAAN's Managing Director Richard Aisuebeogun as saying that construction firm PW Nigeria Ltd, had been engaged to handle the repair work. It will include the milling of the damaged and undulating parts of the runway and the laying of asphalt.

Olukunle said that the airport would be re-opened on Oct. 23, appealing to air travelers to the area to exercise patience during the closure and be understanding.

Meanwhile, Chanchangi Airlines, which is the major airline operating in Kaduna Airport, has shifted its operations to the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) base in the town, where it would start operations from Oct. 14.

The airline, in a statement by its Head of Media, Ibrahim Adamu, said that the NAF base would be used for flight operations during the airport's closure.

It was learnt that FAAN is still battling to meet the eight-week deadline given to it by the NCAA to re-open Runway 18L at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in August.

The runway has been closed for over two years due to rehabilitation works, a situation which has caused losses in revenues estimated at billions of naira.
