Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said on Sunday the government has in the last five years equipped the security personnel in the country with modern communication and better transport facilities to prepare them for modern security challenges and enable them to discharge their duties more effectively.

Kibaki noted that recruitment in the security forces has also been improved within the same period for better police-population ratio in the country.

"We have also improved the terms and conditions of service for members of the disciplined personnel by introducing a 5,000 shillings (about 67.6 U.S. dollars) risk allowance in recognition of the challenges of their work," Kibaki said when he joined uniformed disciplined forces in marking an annual prayer service.

He observed that the government was implementing various housing development projects around the country to provide the disciplined personnel with modern accommodation to improve the quality of lives and enhance the comfort of their families.

Kibaki commended members of the disciplined forces for their role in the on-going resettlement of internally displaced persons and urged them to demonstrate professional integrity and true Christian love by helping those already back in their farms to rebuild their lives.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank all disciplined forces for the outstanding role they played during the post-election challenges the country faced. I urge you all to continue upholding your service oaths by treating all Kenyans equally and serving them without fear or favor," he said.

He reiterated the government commitment to security as a priority and was creating a conducive environment to social and economic development in the country.

"In this regard, l wish to note that the maintenance of law and order is one of the critical pillars of Vision 2030. As custodians of law and order, the performance of the disciplined forces will directly impact on our success in achieving the goals." The Head of State noted.

Kibaki said the courage and selfless service of the disciplined forces to the citizens was appreciated considering that the lives of some security officers are at risk due to the violent behavior of armed bandits, cattle rustlers and robbers.

"I am encouraged to note that despite the challenges, we are making good progress in the fight against crime. I wish to commend all our security agencies for this impressive achievement, and encourage you to strive for higher levels of performance in future." he noted.

The annual thanks giving service brings together the uniformed disciplined officers and their families from Kenya Police, Administration Police, National Youth Service, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service.
