The European humanitarian commissioner on Thursday urged the international community to help the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) restore peace in the west African country's restive east region.
Visiting EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Louis Michel made the appeal during his meeting with DRC President Joseph Kabila.
Michel said he was in the DRC to indicate to the international community that it is time now to "find solutions to all the problems" in the east of the country.
He also called for all parties involved in the conflict to adopt dialogue and discussions for the settlement of the issue.
Kinshasa has become the center of a flurry of diplomacy since the latest wave of clash began at the weekend.
The United States has sent its Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer and National Security Council senior director Bobby Pittman to the DRC for efforts to smooth situation.
Renegade Tutsi General Laurent Nkunda's National Congress for the Defense of the People accuses the government of doing nothing to combat a Rwandese Hutu rebel group, the FDLR (Democratic Forcesfor the Liberation of Rwanda), whose elements were blamed for the 1994 genocide in neighboring Rwanda.
The government denies the charges, insisting it is committed to the peace accord signed in January in the provincial capital Goma, which provides for disarming Rwandese Hutu rebels in the east of the country where they have been holed up since 1994. Source:Xinhua
