The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is leaving for Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, Wednesday to attend a UN-backed summit aiming to end the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting, scheduled to be held Friday and hosted by the African Union (AU), is expected to be participated by presidents of Kenya, the DRC, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Africa.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Ban said he would sit down with President Joseph Kabila of the DRC and Rwandan President Paul Kagame and "encourage them to find a path to peace."

Earlier this week, Ban appointed former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as his special envoy on the DRC crisis and to work with leaders in the region and the international community to end the fighting, which has forced some 250,000 people to flee homes in recent months.
