The police chief of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has appealed to south African countries to help address the domestic security situation.
John Numbi, inspector general of the national police, made the appeal on Thursday at a meeting of police chiefs from member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
He stressed the deterioration of security in DR Congo with a displaced population moving from place to place.
Numbi said the role of the SADC should not be side stepped as it has had played role in the peace process of the country.
DR Congo is facing the most serious situation since its 2006 election. The National Congress for the Defense of the People, led by renegade Tutsi general Laurent Nkunda, has been fighting the government army since August, months after signing the Goma accord in January.
The fighting has spread to a dangerous extent since late last month, displacing 250,000 people and tending to destabilize the entire Great Lakes region.
A UN-backed African summit is being held Friday in Nairobi, Kenya, to find a lasting solution to the conflict. Source: Xinhua
