German President Horst Koehler on Monday began a three-day state visit to Nigeria, reported the News Agency of Nigeria.

At the presidential villa in Abuja, Koehler inspected a guard of honor mounted by the Brigade of Guards, before meeting President Umaru Yar'Adua.

The German president is expected to lead his country's delegation to bilateral talks with Nigerian officials on Monday before the two presidents would address a joint press conference.

He is scheduled to travel to Lagos on Tuesday and Kano on Wednesday from where he would depart for his country.

Koehler has been in the country since Friday to attend the German-African Forum that ended on Sunday.
