Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir was briefed on Monday with the efforts of the Egyptian government to convince Khalil Ibrahim, the leader of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement in Darfur to return to the negotiations table.
This came during the talks held at Khartoum between the Sudanese president and the visiting Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, the official SUNA news agency reported.
President Al-Bashir briefed his Egyptian counterpart on the situation in Darfur as well as the progress of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in southern Sudan besides the preparations for holding the coming general elections next year.
Mubarak told reporters at the end of the meeting that they discussed the bilateral relations linking the two countries which he described as excellent in all domains.
On the situation in southern Sudan, the Egyptian president said that the relations between northern and southern Sudan were progressing well.
"There is cooperation between us," Mubarak said, adding that "President Al- Bashir is well aware of the importance of the unity of the Sudanese territories and supporting the south."
Sudanese Foreign Minister Deng Alor said that President al-Bashir lauded Egypt's efforts to convince the armed movements in Darfur to take part in the coming session of negotiations in Doha, Qatar.
On the visit of the Egyptian President to Juba, the capital of southern Sudan later Monday, Alor said it came as part of the Egyptian efforts to push forward development in southern Sudan that would make the option of unity attractive for the southern Sudanese people.
The Sudanese minister further referred to Egypt's keenness on the unity of Sudan, explaining that Egypt had been implementing several development projects in southern Sudan, including hospitals, power stations and infrastructures.
The Egyptian president Mubarak arrived in Khartoum Monday morning for his first official visit since he assumed power in 1981.
