A group of armed Bedouin on Tuesday besieged a police station in the Sinai Peninsula near the Egyptian border with Israel and captured at least 11 Egyptian policemen, a local source said.
The incident occurred after hundreds of Bedouin gathered overnight in north Sinai in protest against the killing of a tribesman in a shootout with policemen on Monday.
Witnesses said the Bedouin tribesmen opened fire into the air and burned tyres.
Meanwhile, the pan-Arab news channel al-Jazeera reported that the captives include major general Mohamed Sharawy and 10 policemen.
According to earlier report, the Bedouin tribesmen surrounded the police station but didn't take hostages.
