The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), known by its French acronym MONUC, has denounced ceasefire violations in the eastern DRC and called on all parties to respect the ceasefire, a UN statement said Monday.
"MONUC would like, once again, to recall that it's imperative that the ceasefire is respected by all; not only to give a chance to the political process... but also to avoid undue suffering for the civilian populations," the statement said.
The rebel National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), which declared a unilateral ceasefire last month, has launched new attacks and has taken control of new localities, the statement said.
The UN Security Council hopes to vote this week on a resolution that would boost the number of UN peacekeepers in the DRC from the current 17,000 to nearly 20,000 to help avert a repeat of a 1998-2003 Congo war.
Fighting resumed in August after the government and the rebels signed a UN-brokered deal in January in Goma. The renewed conflict has displaced 250,000 people and threatens the stability of the Great Lakes region in Africa.
