Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki held talks with visiting Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen on the achievements of the grand coalition government which was formed early this year.

A statement from Kibaki's office said on Tuesday that Kibaki briefed Rasmussen on the achievements of the Grand Coalition Government and the various reforms it has introduced to achieve a stable and prosperous democracy.

The president noted that the various socio-economic and political reforms introduced by his government and the current political climate in the country were conducive for Danish investors.

He urged the Danish investors to take advantage of the trade and investment opportunities in the country, adding that Kenya was the gateway to both the East African region and Great Lake region.

"He expressed the government's commitment to developing new infrastructure as well as rehabilitating the existing road network and revitalization of the railway lines in addition to I.C.T development," said the statement.

President Kibaki appreciated the support Denmark has accorded Kenya, citing the recent grant of 534 million shillings (6.78 million U.S. dollars) to sustain environmental conservation programs countrywide.

Kibaki noted that Denmark's development programs closely aligned with the Kenyan government's strategies, reforms and policies.

Speaking during the talks, the Danish prime minister hailed thecordial relations between the two countries, saying that Kenya is among top ten largest recipients of Danish support.

Danish NGOs in Kenya mainly focus on advocacy and capacity building, human rights and democratization as well as civic education.

Other subjects of concerns to the NGOs include issues affecting children and the youth, small-scale farming and natural resource management.

Denmark is heavily engaged in donor coordination and chairs the Donor Coordination Group. Danish supports for business development in Kenya will be in focus during the discussions.

The program is quite diverse and provides approximately 700 million shillings (about 9 million U.S. dollars) annually in support of the Government's Private Sector Development Strategy.

This includes business advocacy funds, business development services in support of value chains, micro-finance and strengthening of the labor market.
