A clash between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government forces and a local militia killed six people in the eastern province of North Kivu on Tuesday, the UN peacekeeping mission in the country said.
Some soldiers Tuesday morning looted the towns of Kirumba and Kayna but were defied by the local militia group Pareco, local radio quoted some residents as saying.
The two sides fought until the afternoon, causing the deaths of five militia members and a soldier. The DRC government forces said the conflict was triggered by local militias, who were attempting to hamper a routine deployment.
On Nov. 10, some government forces, retreating after a defeat by the rebel National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), looted Kanyabayonga in North Kivu.
Fighting resumed in the DRC in August following a brief respite that came after the government and rebels signed a UN-brokered deal in January. The renewed conflict has displaced some 250,000 people and threatened the stability of the Great Lakes region in Africa.
