A total of 5,033 Mauritanians living in Senegal have been sent home and properly accommodated so far this year, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Tuesday.
The UNHCR said 199 Mauritanians left Rosso, a city in northern Senegal, for home on Tuesday in the 23rd batch of Mauritanians returning to their home country this year and 118 of them are children born in Senegal, it said.
Most of their parents have lived in Senegal for nearly two decades, said the UNHCR.
Civilian border conflicts between Mauritania and Senegal had resulted in massive expulsion of each other's citizens in 1989, and before long the two countries suspended diplomatic relations, which has made it hard for many Muritanians to return home.
Statistics showed over 24,000 Mauritanians stayed in Senegal at that time. The two countries restored diplomatic ties in 1992.
