Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe left Harare on Wednesday night for Doha, Qatar to attend the United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development to review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus, local media reported on Thursday.
The Doha conference, which will be officially opened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday, is a follow-up to the one held in Monterrey, Mexico, in March 2002.
It drew over 50 heads of state and government and over 200 ministers of finance, foreign affairs, development and trade along with heads of the UN, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization and prominent business leaders, among other stakeholders.
The last conference saw new development aid commitments being made by big powers along with agreements on debt relief, fighting corruption and policy coherence.
The conference to be held at the Convention Center at the Sheraton Doha Resort and Convention Hotel will have a number of side shows organized by delegates, UN organizations and accredited institutional and non-institutional stakeholders.
There will be eight plenary sessions and six interactive multi-stakeholder roundtables on the six major thematic areas of the Monterrey Consensus outlined above.
Mugabe was accompanied by First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe, Foreign Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Industry and International Trade Minister Obert Mpofu and other senior government officials.
