Armed groups in the war-ravaged eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continue to recruit children, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Tuesday.
At least five children were recently enlisted in the town of Kitshanga in precarious North Kivu province during upgraded fighting between government forces and rebel groups, the UNICEF said in a press release.
The majority of schools in the Rutshuru area remained closed, leaving about 150,000 students out of class, it added.
The organization urged all armed groups to allow children to resume their education in a safe environment.
According to the UNICEF, five trucks loaded with aid items, including 30,000 blankets, 15,000 sleeping mats and 4,160 kitchen sets, have reached Goma, the capital of North Kivu, to support the relocation of people displaced by the violence.
