Ugandan science experts have asked the government to create a ministry for science and technology to stop impeding technological development in the East African country.
Dr. Peter Ndemere, the executive secretary of the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST), was quoted by the state-owned New Vision daily on Friday as saying that the lack of an independent ministry for science is urgently in need of change.
Ndemere said an independent ministry will help to identify the country's economic problems, prioritize them and design ways of addressing them effectively through science and technology.
The UNCST was established in 1990 by Act of Parliament as a semi-autonomous government agency to advise, develop and implement policies and strategies for integrating science, technology and research development in Uganda.
