Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu-Bakr Abdalla Al-Gurbi called here Monday on regional countries to work for ways to halt the sea piracy at the Horn of Africa region.

Al-Gurbi made the call while addressing the opening ceremony of a ministerial meeting of the Sanaa Forum for Cooperation which groups Sudan, Yemen, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The sea piracy in the region was "posing a threat to sea navigation" not only for the counties in the region but also for the whole world, Al-Gurbi told the meeting in Khartoum.

Referring to the serious impacts of the piracy on regional and world trade and economy, the Yemeni minister noted that the matter "necessitated cooperation and coordination between the countries at the Horn of Africa region and within the international community to work out policies for ending the piracy phenomenon."

Al-Gurbi also urged that Somali forces shall be strengthened so as to contribute to combating piracy and the member states of the Forum of Sanaa for Cooperation should consolidate their cooperation to realize development.

He, meanwhile, appreciated Ethiopia's decision to withdraw its forces from Somalia, calling for urgent deployment of international peace-keeping troops in Somalia.
