Kenyan Muslims on Tuesday condemned Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and called on the Kenyan government to suspend its diplomatic relations with Israel.
Addressing a news conference in Nairobi, nine Muslim umbrella organizations led by the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims and National Muslims Leaders Forum also urged the government to join in efforts aimed at halting Israeli aggression against the Palestinians.
"We call upon the international community and, particularly, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to step up pressure towards the Zionist regime of Israel to halt its campaign of murder and destruction against the Palestinian people and end the occupation and to boost efforts towards Palestinian statehood," they said in a joint statement.
They also urged the government to send a strong letter of protest to Israel over the attacks meted out on the innocent Palestinians.
According to Palestinian medical officials, more than 560 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched massive military attacks on Gaza 11 days ago in what Israel said a move aimed at silencing Hamas rockets from Gaza. The UN says at least 25 percent of those killed are civilians.
At least 20 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday, while three Israeli soldiers were killed by fire from one of their own tanks in northern Gaza.
