The Tanzania and Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) now owes 60 million U.S. dollars to various institutions for supplies and services, the TAZARA managing director has admitted.
In an interview given to and published on Thursday by English broadsheet Daily News, the managing director said that the debts had arisen from nonpayment of workers, deductions payable to the Tanzania Revenue Authority and other service providers.
Managing Director Henry Chipewo told the newspaper that his company was a victim of acts of sabotage such as thefts, grafts, misuse of company benefits and mismanagement.
TAZARA currently employs 3,000 workers and staff with a combined monthly wage bill amounting to 1.7 million dollars.
The TAZARA management and auditors are now going through the company's books of accounts and the managing director has pledged to take those responsible for the sabotage to courts.
TAZARA is a railway line linking Dar es Salaam of Tanzania and New Kapiri Mposhi of Zambia. The railway line measures 1,860 kilometers in all. Source: Xinhua
