Visiting Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission Jean Ping said here on Friday that the situation in Africa is worrying, judging by the events that have occurred in some African countries.

After meeting with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, the AU official said he has discussed and analyzed with the Angolan head of state issues related to the situation prevailing in the continent.

He cited such countries as Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Guinea Conakry, Zimbabwe and Madagascar, saying that the situation in these countries are worrying.

For example, he said, the incidents in Madagascar led to the removal of former President of Madagascar Marc Ravalomanana, adding that the conflict in the country "must be resolved based on dialogue."

He said Angolan President Dos Santos can continue to contribute to the resolution of problems affecting the continent.

"We want Angola and therefore its president to continue to support the AU to resolve the prevailing problems," he said.

But he also said that there are some "memorable" events occurred in Africa including the successful elections in Angola and Ghana in the past one year.
