Nigerien President Mamadou Tandja on Tuesday declared the parliament of the Central African country has been dissolved, agencies quoted state radio as reporting.

According to the reports, Tandja signed a decree to dissolve the parliament on the advice of the prime minister and the speaker of parliament. No further details or reasons of the move were available.

The development came after lawmakers of the country viewed a letter from Tandja which revealed his decision to organize a referendum about a new constitution.

The reports said the Constitutional Court has expressed its opposition to the holding of the referendum, saying the bid was illegal and against current constitution.
