Madagascan High Transitional Authority president Andry Rajoelina leaved on Friday night for a meeting with the European Union in Brussels on the political crisis, which hit the Indian Ocean island country since last December.

The meeting, scheduled to begin Tuesday at the EU headquarter in Brussels, would focus on the legality of Madagascan transitional authority and political development in the country.

EU would access Madagascan political development under the framework of Cotonou Agreement, a treaty signed between the EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of states in June 2000 in Cotonou, the largest city in Benin.

EU would evaluate whether the Madagascan transitional authority has violated the eighth article on peace, security, stability, democracy and human right protection of the treaty.

The outcome of the dialogue would have effect on EU future aid to Madagascar, 577 million euros (807.8 million U.S. dollars) between 2007 and 2012 under original arrangement.

Rajoelina was accompanied by his advisor Norbert Lala Ratsirahonana, his director of cabinet Zaza Ramandimbiarisoa, some ministers and the navy admiral Hyppolite Ramaroson.

Rajoelina told reporters on Friday evening that his delegation would defend the case of Madagascar in Bussels because EU has stopped its assistance to the island country since Rajoelina officially replace Ravalomanana on March 21.

Due to a strong support of Madagascan armed forces to the former Antananarivo mayor Andry Rajoelina, Ravalomanana resigned on March 17 after giving up his full power to the military top brass, led by Ramaroson, who transferred the presidency to Rajoelina hours later.

The international community, including European Union, condemned the power transfer in the island country as unconstitutional even a coup and decided to stop all non humanitarian assistance to the country.

However, the transitional government has argued that what it has been doing was for the realization of a true democracy and a better political system, which was not dictated by the precedent regimes.
