African leaders attending a climate summit in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, renewed the call on Sunday for climate aid from partners.
Conscious of the limits of their efforts, the African heads of states and governments asked their partners from the rest of the world to help the continent in maintaining the achievements of the Kyoto Protocol, especially the reduction in gas emissions which is still fiercely contested by the developed countries, a declaration after the forum read.
African leaders held the 7th World Forum on Sustainable Development in Ouagadougou on Oct. 9-11 under the theme "Climatic Change: Challenges for Sustainable Development".
They also called for help with other developing countries being threatened by the effects of climate change.
The assistance is needed to help developing countries adapt to the changes, ease the risks and benefit from technological transfer, the African leaders said.
They urged the international community to help African countries in fight against the harmful effects of climate change, while naming Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore to do all he can to ensure that their declaration is part of the agenda during the 15th United Nations conference on climate change.
African countries which have contributed the least to gas emissions are suffering the most in the effects ranging from draught and floods. Their leaders are expected to seek an annual 67 billion U. S. dollars in compensation at the Copenhagen climate change meeting in December.
