UK unveils $70 mln in aid to DR Congo's police reforms

Britain unveiled a package of 40 million sterling pounds (close to 70 million U. S. dollars) on Monday in aid to the police reforms in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

British Ambassador to the DRC Nick Kay announced the donation from his country to boost the central African country's national police.

Kay unveiled the aid at a meeting on police reform in the DRC, which is among others aimed at "practical things" to improve the quality of life for police officers.

Congolese Interior Minister Celestin Mbuyu Kabango said the police reforms are already in progress and will cost close to 1.3 billion dollars over a period of 15 years.

In the next three years, the Congolese police reforms require about 300 million dollars. The DRC has launched an appeal to partners to raise the fund.
