The Nigerian government has said it will spare no efforts to ensure adequate security of lives and properties of its citizens.

Minister of Interior Emeka Wogu said this to reporters in Abuja on Saturday. The minister expressed concern over the internal security of the country, noting that government would continue to pursue strict border control policy.

"We need to start doing something about it in order to come up with strategies on how to go about border control in the subsequent elections because of the challenges that we had," Wogu added.

"I believe that if the borders are shut, we might not have influx of miscreants from neighboring countries that could equally be capable of unleashing mayhem on Nigerians," the minister said.

Wogu told reporters that the ministry would also ensure that expatriate quotas were not given to foreigners where there were qualified Nigerians to take up such jobs.

The minister highlighted human trafficking and issue of refugees as one of the areas that would receive his immediate attention because of the danger it posed to peace within Nigeria's territorial borderline.

On the recent spate of post-election violence in some parts of the country, the minister appealed to Nigerians especially the youths, not to allow themselves to be used to perpetrate violence.
