The 34th session of the UNESCO General Conference opened here Tuesday to discuss guidelines for the UN agency's actions for 2008-2013.
The meeting was opened by Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, permanent delegate of Oman to UNESCO and president of the 33rd session of the General Conference.
Zhang Xinsheng, chairman of the UNESCO executive board and Chinese Vice Minister of Education, and the Director-General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura also made statements during the opening ceremony.
Some 2,000 delegates from the Paris-based agency's 193 members are to approve the 2008-2009 budget of 631 million U.S. dollars, which is slightly higher than the current budget of 610 million dollars.
A ministerial round table "Education and Economic Development" will be held on Friday and Saturday, and another round table called "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development and the Role of UNESCO" will be held on Oct. 26.
On Tuesday, the organization also launched an exhibition named "Planet Earth: From Space to Place" featuring the work of UNESCO concerning sustainable development and climate change.
The session will be concluded on Nov. 13.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), founded in 1945, promotes fundamental human rights, the free flow of ideas and information, scientific and cultural cooperation and educational opportunities for all.
