UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned on Thursday the deadly bomb attacks on a convoy of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in the southern port city of Karachi.
The secretary-general is "shocked to hear" that the convoy of Bhutto, "who arrived in Karachi a few hours ago, was attacked by two road side bombs reportedly killing more than 100 people and injuring many more," Ban's press office said in a statement.
"The secretary-general strongly condemns this terrorist attack and expresses condolences to the families of the victims. He trusts that all political forces will act together to strengthen national unity," it added.
According to media reports, two bombs exploded early Friday near the vehicle carrying Bhutto on her return to Pakistan after eight years in exile, killing at least 110 people and wounding some 100 others. However, Bhutto was safe from the blasts.
Bhutto is expected to seek the premiership for an unprecedented third time in Pakistan's upcoming elections in January.
