UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Israel on Friday to take all measures to improve the humanitarian situation of the Palestinian people.
The UN chief made the appeal during his meeting at the UN Headquarters with visiting Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, according to a press readout issued by Ban's press office.
Ban and Barak discussed "developments in the Middle East peace process and agreed on the importance of the United States-sponsored international meeting scheduled for November."
The UN chief briefed Barak on the work of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, saying that the UN would continue its efforts to secure the release of Israel's abducted soldiers.
"The secretary-general strongly urged the deputy prime minister to take all possible steps to improve the humanitarian situation of the Palestinian people and reaffirmed the UN's commitment to ensure that Palestinian humanitarian needs were being met," it added.
Israel has closed or restricted the handful of border crossings with the Gaza Strip, home to some 1.4 million people, since Hamas gained control of the territory following deadly intra-Palestinian violence in June.
