UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday expressed deep concern about the ongoing crisis in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its impact on the region.
The UN chief has decided to dispatch Haile Menkerios, assistant secretary-general for political affairs, on a special mission to the region, Ban's press office said in a statement.
Menkerios, who previously served as deputy special representative of the secretary-general for the DRC, will leave for the region on Wednesday evening, it said.
Menkerios will consult with DRC government officials and other leaders in the region, as well as the DRC's bilateral and multilateral partners, to find ways to resolve the immediate crisis and to address its underlying causes, it said.
In carrying out his mission, Menkerios will coordinate closely with the secretary-general's special representative for the DRC and with international partners currently engaged in initiatives to help resolve the crisis, it added Source: Xinhua
