U.N. Secretary-General BanKi-moon intended to nominate Belgian prosecutor Serge Brammertz to succeed Carla Del Ponte as Prosecutor of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
In a letter to the president of the security council made public on Tuesday, Ban named Brammertz, who currently heads the U.N. International Independent Investigation Commission (UNIIIC)into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, as his nominee to become the new chief prosecutor at the ICTY.
According to the letter, Del Ponte notified the U.N. chief she does not wish to be considered for reappointment for a new term after her mandate has been extended to the end of this year. Source: Xinhua
