U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Friday the lifting of the state of emergency in Georgia.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban emphasized the importance of the full restoration of freedom of expression and association to allow for a credible electoral process leading to elections in Georgia on Jan. 5, 2008.

In particular, the secretary-general looked forward for all media to fully resume normal operations in order to offer all relevant actors equal access in the electoral campaign.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on Friday lifted the 15-day state of emergency he imposed in his country ahead of the schedule. The parliament approved of the early lift of the state of emergency, which was supposed to be 15 days, at 7 p.m. local time (1500 GMT).
